A week of dawn launches over the city and a Night Glow finale. It’s free, it’s early, and it fills Hamilton’s accommodation for the weekend. Waypoint is a short drive from the launch sites, with a powered site waiting when you get back.

Waypoint is a small, self-service campground for self-contained motorhomes, campervans and caravans at 368 Holland Road, Puketaha, on the north-east edge of Hamilton. You book online, get your site number and gate details by email, and let yourself in — there’s no front desk and no check-in queue.
Every site is level and sized for a large motorhome or a caravan with a tow vehicle. Power is an optional add-on when you book and switches on automatically from 1pm on your arrival day until your checkout time. Fresh water is on site; there are no toilets, showers or dump station, so you need to be fully self-contained — the nearest public dump station and rubbish drop-off are listed on our Explore nearby page.
Innes Common sits beside Hamilton Lake on the south-west side of the city centre. From Waypoint it’s a straightforward drive across town — the directions link gives you the live route and time. Launches happen around sunrise, so leave in the dark and park early; streets around the lake fill fast. The Night Glow is a separate ticketed-or-free evening event at a venue the organisers announce each year — check their site before you go.
Balloons only fly in calm conditions. The organisers post go/no-go updates each morning; a powered site means a warm coffee while you wait for the call.
Mass ascensions are first light. Waypoint has no front desk and no gate hours, so an early departure is no problem.
The big one — balloons lit up in sequence to music, usually on the Saturday. Expect a crowd and allow time to park.
The main launches are free; some evening events are ticketed. Details on the organiser’s site.
Hamilton and the Waikato are easy to explore from Waypoint — cafés, farmers’ markets, Hamilton Gardens and day trips to Hobbiton, Waitomo and Raglan. See our local guide, and the rest of what’s on in Hamilton.
